A tragic accident on US Route 33 in Fairfield County claimed the life of a young man yesterday, law enforcement officials confirmed. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Austin T. Mathias, a 23-year-old from Ashville, was involved in a fatal two-vehicle collision while traveling eastbound on the highway near Berne Township. The incident occurred at approximately 12:59 p.m., according to ABC6.
Details released by authorities indicate that Quinlan W. McCabe, a 21-year-old driver from Logan, crashed into the rear of Mathias's vehicle with his truck, as reported by WBNS. The collision, which forced Mathias' Ford Ranger off the road and caused it to overturn after striking a traffic signpost, resulted in his death at the scene.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol further clarified that McCabe was transported to Fairfield Medical Center for evaluation and was later released. The nature of the collision has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding why McCabe "failed to maintain assured clear distance ahead," as he collided with the other vehicle. The impact, which resulted in the fatality, is still under inquiry, and the Highway Patrol has not indicated whether any charges or citations are being considered for McCabe at this time. The Columbus Dispatch corroborated this information.
