With the Peachtree Road Race and the FIFA Club World Cup final on the horizon, the Atlanta Police Department is ramping up security measures to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. During a press conference yesterday, Deputy Chief Charles Hampton, along with Deputy Chief Kelley Collier and Executive Director Desiree Arnold, detailed the steps being taken in preparation for these major events. The conference, captured in video and presentation formats, highlighted the department's plea for public vigilance: "If you see something, say something."
According to the news release from the Atlanta Police Department, extra officers will be visible throughout the city, particularly around event locales to help spot suspicious activity such as unattended bags or someone lingering near restricted zones. Running the world’s largest 10K, the department emphasizes the importance of community participation in keeping everyone safe. In particular situations, they advise casting a keen eye on anyone who may seem unduly nervous or evasive.
Recognizing that everyone plays a role in preventing harm, the officials urge immediate reporting of any concerns. "Report Quickly – Even a small tip matters. Call or text 911, or use our non-emergency line at (404) 658-6666," the Atlanta Police Department stated in the release. The call to action is clear: share what you observed, including location, time, and descriptions, and do so without hesitation, no matter how trivial the concern may seem.
With particular regard to personal property, the Atlanta Police Department reminds eventgoers to keep their belongings secure, following the guidelines of their Clean Car Campaign. It's recommended to never leave valuables, particularly firearms, in an unattended vehicle, unless secured in a lockable vehicle safe. Doing so can prevent your possessions from being stolen and possibly used in a crime. While providing these security tips, the department advises attendees to plan ahead and consider alternatives like MARTA or ride-share services, anticipating heavy traffic near race routes and stadiums. "Together, we’ll keep Atlanta safe and welcoming for everyone to enjoy these unforgettable events," they said in the press release, urging the community's active engagement in safeguarding their surroundings.
