The Atlanta Police Foundation has rolled out a new incentive program, offering a $10,000 signing bonus for seasoned law enforcement officers willing to transfer to the Atlanta Police Department (APD). Detailed on Tuesday, this initiative targets certified officers from other agencies in what appears to be a concerted effort to strengthen public safety prior to a spate of major upcoming events in the city, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup being among the most notable.
As a part of the "Build the Force" campaign, aside from the financial bonus, lateral transfer candidates are being enticed with benefits such as housing assistance and childcare incentives. "We are investing in experience," Dave Wilkinson, president and CEO of the Atlanta Police Foundation, told FOX 5 Atlanta. He highlighted the importance of tried and tested skills that seasoned officers bring, acknowledging that this bonus is their way of appreciating those ready to dedicate their service to Atlanta.
The campaign is not running solely on taxpayer money as the bonuses and additional incentives, such as mental wellness support and life insurance coverage, are being financed through private donations from the Atlanta business community. According to a WSB Radio interview with Curtislene Bass, Director of Officer Support Programs, these efforts focus on ensuring the department is "fully staffed with capable, experienced officers" ahead of the World Cup spectacle.
Qualified officers keen on this opportunity can find more information and submit their applications at JoinAtlantaPD.org. Meanwhile, the city anticipates the benefits of what these experienced officers can and will contribute, as next year's World Cup approaches and the eyes of the world prepare to watch, and as Atlanta aims to ensure those eyes meet a city at its safest and most secure.
