The tragic aftermath of the Kerr County flooding continues to unfold as the community grapples with the loss of young lives from Camp Mystic. Among those confirmed dead are two 8-year-old girls from Austin, Linnie McCown and Mary Stevens. McCown, a student at Casis Elementary, was remembered by her family in a heartrending appeal for privacy, "Our family is experiencing unimaginable grief, and we are asking for privacy and compassion as we mourn the loss of our beloved Linnie," her family's statement, released to FOX 7 Austin, read.
In the face of this immense tragedy, Michael McCown, father of Linnie, recalled the joy his daughter brought to their lives in a social media post, reported by the Austin American-Statesman, "She filled our hearts with so much joy we cannot begin to explain. We are going to miss her so very much but know she's up there shining bright." Alongside Linnie, Mary Stevens' mother, Stacy, shared her own devastation through a post reminding us of her daughter's fearless and compassionate spirit.
Camp Mystic officials have confirmed the deaths of 27 campers and counselors thus far, with additional missing persons still unaccounted for. Community efforts to support the victims and their families are underway, with FOX 7 Austin encouraging contributions to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country’s Kerr County Flood Relief Fund.
As the death toll climbs to at least 59, including 21 children, the Austin school district is mobilizing support for the grieving families and those still awaiting news of the missing. Superintendent Matias Segura expressed his heartbreak over the impact on district families, promising resources through the crisis and counseling team to aid in the aftermath. As reported by the Austin American-Statesman, Segura urged, "We know that some of our families and staff may be facing loss or uncertainty and we are coordinating with our crisis and counseling team to provide support and any needed services to our families and staff in the days ahead."
Plans for a prayer vigil hosted by Casis Elementary are underway as the school community comes together during this somber time. The impact of these tragic events continues to reverberate through the Austin community as search efforts for those still missing persist amid the devastation caused by the unexpected and tumultuous floodwaters that have irrevocably changed so many lives.
