The Canutillo Independent School District is gearing up for a transformation with its newest middle school designs snagging awards even before their foundations have been poured. The Texas Society of Architects recently bestowed the 2025 Studio Award on the plans for the new Canutillo and Alderete middle schools, set to start construction this fall, as reported by Canutillo ISD. These designs didn't just appear out of thin air; they are a result of a partnership between DLR Group and Root Architects, who drew inspiration from the natural allure of the region and the district's progressive learning objectives.
Running the show behind the scenes, Procedeo Group has been tasked with managing the projects on behalf of Canutillo ISD. As per Canutillo ISD, Board President Armando Rodriguez hailed the design, saying, "The design of our new middle schools reflects Canutillo’s bold vision as a leader in Texas education and as a transformative force in the El Paso region." He touted the award as indicative of local creativity and commitment, suggesting that it reflects the community's united efforts in striving for its highest potential.
The Studio Awards aren't just handing out kudos for any drafting table concept; they recognize unbuilt architectural projects that embody innovation and conceptually strong design. The Canutillo ISD middle schools were praised for integrating the district's dedication to educational excellence with elements of sustainability and local flavor. Designed with 'The Paseo' at its nucleus, each campus will soon enjoy collaborative spaces, state-of-the-art classrooms, and outdoor learning areas, thoughtfully connected by this central path intended to stimulate movement and interaction among students and staff.
The forthcoming schools, replacing the existing Canutillo and Alderete middle schools, promise equal playing fields in terms of facilities, yet maintain a unique touch that mirrors the essence of their respective neighborhoods. "Each will promote a sense of belonging and pride in the Canutillo community," echoing the words from Canutillo ISD. Anchoring these designs are sustainability efforts such as passive solar techniques and energy-efficient practices, acknowledging the growing importance of environmental consciousness in educational spaces.
A.J. Sustaita, a Principal with DLR Group and lead for K-12 Education, extended gratitude to everyone involved in the collaborative process, including students and educators. As told by Canutillo ISD, Sustaita remarked, "Our guiding principle on the designs of CMS and AMS was to represent the longstanding traditions and culture of Canutillo, while also looking toward the future in education to provide a best-in-class learning environment for all. Viva Canutillo!" Both campuses are expected to be completed in about two years after construction commences.
