Allegedly occurring at the Bureau of Prisons facility in Beaumont, the altercation is now at the center of federal charges that could result in a maximum of 20 years in prison for Mendoza, should he be convicted. Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced that this case is part of the nationwide Operation Take Back America, aimed at addressing illegal immigration and combating violent crime. The officers involved were not named during the announcement of the indictment.
The broader initiative of the Operation Take Back America involves the Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN). The plan aims to thwart the efforts of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, which were not directly implicated in Mendoza's case.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is heading the investigation of the assault, with the prosecution being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James.
