A tragic incident unfolded in South Los Angeles when a bicyclist was killed in an overnight collision involving multiple vehicles at the intersection of West Vernon Avenue and South Figueroa Street, as reported by KTLA. The clash, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, resulted in the bicyclist, a 29-year-old man, being fatally struck by a driver, subsequently pronounced dead by first responders at the scene.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the cyclist was traveling eastbound across Figueroa when he was hit by a vehicle going south, the driver, a 32-year-old man, was critically injured and transported to a hospital, and although the driver responsible for the crash remained at the scene, as of now, it remains unclear whether charges will be pressed as indicated by ABC7.
The chaotic aftermath, captured in videos posted on the Citizen App, depicted multiple wrecked vehicles, a body covered with a white sheet in the roadway, and a man being loaded onto a stretcher while a growing crowd of residents, many from families with children, gathered around the crash site. A nearby resident, Gonzalo Almaraz, recounted to KTLA how neighbors rushed to assist, one of whom helped "lift the vehicle to try and extract the person" trapped underneath.
Further emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Almaraz also shared insights into the frequent occurrence of crashes in the area, explaining to KTLA, "My neighbor said he heard a loud bang, and when he came out, he helped one of the people trapped underneath the vehicle," giving a harrowing account of the attempts by residents to mobilize aid before the arrival of emergency services. Meanwhile, the scene was cleared by authorities by 7 a.m. on Sunday as the investigation into the cause of the crash carries on, leaving a somber note in a community too often acquainted with such tragedies.
