Boston residents are bracing for a sizzle, as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s today and potentially break records tomorrow. The National Weather Service forecast for Boston indicates a sunny and hot day today, with highs reaching near 90 degrees and southwest winds blowing at 9 to 14 mph.
Tonight, the city won't see much relief from the heat with lows dipping only back into the mid-70s amid, a mostly clear sky. Friday's temperatures are anticipated to be scorching, with highs near 97 degrees and a heat index as high as 102. Residents can expect a chance of showers, and thunderstorms post 3 pm, with a 30% chance of precipitation. According to National Weather Service, southwest winds will persist around 10 mph, with potential gusts as high as 20 mph.
NBC Boston reports that Heat Advisories are in place for today and tomorrow, with the heat index reaching the mid and upper 90s this afternoon. Residents are advised to take it slow and to seek cool refuge, possibly near water bodies, if available. Air quality is also expected to decline, suggesting any outdoor exercise should be completed early in the day.
Relief from the heat is forecasted to arrive in the form of a cold front late Friday, which might instigate strong storms in the evening, though widespread coverage appears unlikely. As the weekend progresses the front is expected to stall, which means Saturday should remain clear but showers might encroach upon Sunday's plans. While early next week will see a temperature rebound, a more definitive cool air surge is predicted to hit by late Wednesday.
