Commuters in Brooklyn and Queens will experience further changes this summer as G train service is suspended for the MTA’s ongoing signal modernization project. As reported by ABC7 New York, the G train will not run between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues on selected weeknights and weekends. This phase of the service disruption, part of the subway upgrades that began last summer, is scheduled to continue from today through August 18.
The MTA is providing affected riders with a free shuttle bus service that follows the train route and stops at all regular stations between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue. Additionally, the G train will continue to operate between Church Avenue and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue, maintaining service to portions of the usual route before resuming normal stops beyond this section.
The signal overhaul aims to modernize a system dating back to the 1930s by upgrading the G train to the same Communications-based Train Control (CBTC) signaling currently used on the L and 7 lines, as PIX11 details. With a budget of $368 million, the project is expected to improve service reliability and increase train frequency for the 160,000 daily riders who rely on the line.
Service interruptions are scheduled overnight from 9:45 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., with weekend suspensions affecting travel from Friday evenings through early Monday mornings. PIX11 has provided detailed updates and schedule changes to assist travelers in planning their trips.
