The great outdoors has proven to be more than a pastime for Byron Haigler, the recently appointed director of Active Living and Parks in Cabarrus County. After having encountered a bear at 14 and battling cancer at 25, Haigler is leveraging his personal trials to promote public service and outdoor education. He took reins from the former department leader, Londa Strong, who retired after an impressive four-decade tenure, according to an article published by Cabarrus County.

Scaling the ranks since 2009, Haigler has been a part of the Active Living and Parks department in many roles, culminating in his appointment as assistant director in 2017. "This department is more than parks, centers, programs and events—it’s the people, passion and commitment we share to make Cabarrus County a better place," Haigler told Cabarrus County. He aims to honor Strong's legacy while injecting a burst of fresh energy to meet the dynamic needs of residents.

The timing of Haigler's leadership assumes significance as it coincides with the County's expansion, including two new facilities that merge active living centers with libraries. Now overseeing five parks and three centers delivering 3,200-plus programs to over two million visitors annually, Haigler is tasked with a significant mandate.

His love for nature, sparked during his Boy Scouts days, swiftly turned grim with an unexpected bear attack during a trek. The event was a crucible moment, shaping his approach towards wildlife and nature conservation. Haigler channeled this experience into a teaching opportunity at Grandfather Mountain, confronting his bear phobia head-on and sharing his knowledge with visitors, "It's where I found my purpose," he said in a statement obtained by Cabarrus County.

Another chapter unfolded with a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, reshaping his perspective yet again. A supportive work environment at the County coupled with an indomitable will saw him through difficult times. Post-recovery, Haigler found solace in running and woodworking – both avenues offering him an outlet for stress and insomnia. His new post cancer life includes leading his son's Cub Scout Pack and running a side business, Haigler Handcrafted, which honors the County's commitment to outdoor spaces.

With an eye on the future, Haigler's top priority is the department's new strategic plan, which focuses on broadening access to active living options, upgrading park amenities, and responding to the growing needs of the community. "What truly brings me joy is what we do to impact the community," Haigler expressed. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to explore the myriad of activities and programs offered by Cabarrus County's parks and active living centers this Park and Recreation Month.
