Charlotte residents can expect a sunny and hot day today with the mercury set to climb near a scorching 96 degrees. The heat index, which measures how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, could reach a sweltering 103, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Light winds will grace the afternoon, but they will provide little respite from the blistering conditions.
As the evening approaches, the skies are predicted to stay mostly clear, while temperatures will dip to a warm 75 degrees. Being light, the south southwest wind will offer some cooling, though the night promises to remain sultry.
Change is on the horizon for Tuesday, with a weather system bringing a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after the afternoon hours. Temperatures will persist in their high summer trend, with a peak around 97 degrees and heat index values matching today's highs. "New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms," states the NWS, offering a glimmer of potential relief for the heat-stricken area.
Frequent changes in the weather pattern are expected throughout the week. Wednesday forecasts indicate a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, most likely occurring after 3 pm. NWS has predicted the day will start off mostly sunny with highs peaking near 94 degrees. However, by nightfall, the chance of precipitation will increase, potentially leading to severe weather events, as the likelihood of storms rises to 70 percent before 2 am.
The rest of the week seems to carry the theme of instability, with showers and thunderstorms forecasted for Thursday and Friday. NWS anticipates an 80 percent chance of precipitation on Thursday and a slightly lower 60 percent chance on Friday. Daytime temperatures will continue to be warm in the low 90s, while nights will remain muggy at around 72 degrees.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Charlotte won't break free from the pattern, with a steady rhythm of 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day and a 30 percent chance at night.
