Residents in Chicago are gearing up for a sizzling start to the week with forecasts indicating a substantial rise in temperatures. Today's outlook promises mostly sunny skies, with a high approaching 85 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The calm wind expected to turn east southeast at around 5 mph this afternoon.
As reported by FOX 32 Meteorologist Mike Caplan, the region is suffering under a heavy blanket of heat, and while Sunday dodged severe weather warnings, minor floods visited Northwest Indiana after isolated, heavy rains. In a spectacle of nature before dawn, thunderstorms adorned the southern sky, hinting at what the day might hold. Residents should be on the lookout for possible short-lived heavy downpours and lightning towards Northwest Indiana, which should abate after sunrise, leaving a partly to mostly sunny day as temperatures climb into the low 90s. A small chance of a spotty afternoon thunderstorm looms over the day as well.
While the current night is set to be partly cloudy with a low around 75, the real scorcher is anticipated on Monday. Temperatures are expected to sizzle near 94 degrees with heat index values peaking as high as 103, marking what could become the hottest day of the year, as indicated in FOX 32's report. Light southwest winds will accompany the evening's partial cloudiness, setting a low of around 76 degrees.
Looking to the days ahead, Tuesday is expected to bring a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 pm, accompanied by partly sunny conditions and a high of nearly 88 degrees. In pursuit of the heat, as the mercury pushes forward into the low to mid-90s, a whispering of thunder cannot be ruled out. However, by Tuesday night, rain chances elevate as a cold front is expected to edge into the Chicago area, which, in turn, may ignite scattered thunderstorms and bring an end to the intense heat, ushering in a return to seemingly more tolerable temperatures hovering around 80 degrees for the latter part of the week.
The high humidity tormenting residents over the past week is also predicted to decrease, providing much-needed relief from the oppressive mugginess. Looking beyond Tuesday's turbulent potential, Wednesday to Friday is forecasted to sustain highs not far from the comfortable 80-degree mark. Chicagoans can look forward to a spell of fresh air as the cold front sweeps in, reshaping the city's thermal landscape.
