In what's being hailed as a small-scale urban miracle, Chili, a feisty Chihuahua mix, has been reunited with his owners after spending 10 fraught days lost in New York City which included a suspenseful swim in the Hudson River. According to NBC New York, the tiny canine managed to escape his harness and sprinted away from owner Gabrielle Porter amidst the chaotic streets of Manhattan, leading to an extensive search that ended with his rescue by a group of kayakers.
Chili's unexpected aquatic adventure began after a mishap on June 11, when he slipped out of his harness and was clipped by a car causing him to bolt in panic, "he kind of got hit by a car, a car bonked him and slammed on his brakes then he got spooked, so he went running down south, and we ran after him — but he’s so fast," Porter recounted in an interview obtained by The New York Post. The pet owners' desperation grew with each passing day, as they canvassed the area and posted flyers throughout the city, even weathering false claims of witnessing Chili's fate.
After enduring the cruelty of prank callers and false leads, Porter and her boyfriend were clinging to hope when they received a call from kayaker Joseph Scarpetta, who had spotted the struggling dog in the river off Pier 26, reporting, "immediately, I recognized the dog... I had seen flyers all over the place for this dog," Scarpetta shared with The New York Post. The small dog had to be extracted from a mass of floating trash, and his rescue required the collective effort of several kayakers to lift him out of the hazardous water.
The ordeal left Chili severely malnourished and dehydrated, necessitating delicate care to recover, "he’s a survivor, he really wanted to fight to come home," Porter expressed to NBC New York.
