Last Sunday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) cracked down on a group of speedsters tearing through the streets of San Francisco. As reported in a social media post by CHP San Francisco, six vehicles were cited for blasting past the 100 mph mark in what appeared to be a high-speed contest on both I-280 and the Bay Bridge.
The incident kicked off near Geneva Avenue, where a Ford Mustang, a Toyota Supra, and four BMW sedans were spotted weaving through traffic at breakneck speeds. Sgt. V. Juarez of CHP San Francisco Area and her team quickly jumped into action, relaying the vehicles' locations to other CHP units as the race continued onto US-101 and then eastbound on I-80, heading toward the Bay Bridge.
Ultimately, the speed demons were reeled in at Treasure Island after making it on the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. The enforcement stops resulted in eight citations for various offenses, ranging from unsafe speed to mechanical violations. One of the BMW drivers faced the additional headache of an expired vehicle registration, leading to their car being towed from the scene.
In their post, the CHP reminded us that, while it's all good to enjoy a drive with friends, safety should never take a back seat. "The posted speed limits are not suggestions and are set to help ensure optimal safety to all motorists," the CHP San Francisco's social media statement emphasized.
