A California Highway Patrol officer tragically lost his life early Wednesday morning following what's suspected to be a medical emergency while on duty. Officer Miguel Cano, aged 34, who had been with CHP since November 2023, perished after his patrol SUV went off the road and struck a tree in Culver City. The crash was reported just after 12:30 a.m., and Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, as per NBC Los Angeles.
The incident, which involved a detainee being transported in the vehicle, occurred on Bristol Parkway near Green Valley Circle. The circumstances preceding the crash suggest that Officer Cano told his partner he wasn’t feeling well prior to losing control of the SUV. While the cause of the accident remains under investigation, "We do not think the crash was consistent with fatal injuries," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee indicated in a statement obtained by CBS Los Angeles. It is unclear how, but Cano’s partner and the detainee suffered minor injuries.
According to FOX LA, first responders at the scene administered Narcan to Cano, possibly anticipating an overdose, after the detainee was found with drugs in their possession. Commissioner Duryee clarified in a news conference that there was no immediate evidence suggesting the officers had been exposed to the substances found.
CHP has ruled out drug exposure as a cause for the incident, and the arrested individual was confirmed to have drugs, and an illegal hand, gun at the time of the arrest, as per information shared during the press conference attended by KTLA. Officer Cano is survived by his wife and parents. The CHP community has expressed their sorrow over the loss of Officer Cano, a Moreno Valley resident whose "dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten," Commissioner Duryee stated.
Following the accident, the area of Bristol Parkway near Green Valley Circle was closed to ensure the safety of the investigation team. The roadways have since been reopened. Officer Cano's untimely death is a reminder of the unexpected dangers law enforcement officers may face, including those not directly linked to criminal encounters or acts of physical confrontation. The ultimate cause of his death awaits the conclusions of the coroner’s investigation.
