Financial giant Citigroup is set to anchor its operations further into the fertile economic landscape of Charlotte with a significant expansion. According to a press release from the City of Charlotte, the company will pour $16.1 million into a new office facility, creating 510 jobs, and consolidating its commitment to a city already bustling with financial acumen.

"As we reviewed our real estate footprint in the United States, Charlotte stood out as a location where we had a unique opportunity to invest by establishing a formal presence," Edward Skyler, Citi’s Head of Enterprise Services & Public Affairs, expressed in a statement obtained by the City of Charlotte. The expansion includes a range of positions in finance, compliance, and wealth management, each carrying an average annual salary of $133,435, well above the local MSA average.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein heralded Citi's decision, underlining Charlotte's status as a top-tier financial hub. "North Carolina offers a specialized and highly skilled workforce along with a friendly business climate," Governor Stein said, as reported by the City of Charlotte. The state's focused investments in education and workforce development have positioned it at the forefront of desirable business locales.

With this move, Citigroup will bolster its Charlotte-based workforce to 785, which includes relocating approximately 275 employees already established in the region. Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mark Jerrell highlighted the alignment of Citigroup’s investment with the Board's goals, stating, "It’s a win for our residents, bringing high-quality jobs and advancing Mecklenburg County’s long-term priorities." The statement, released by the City of Charlotte, captures the broader economic aspirations of local governance.

Charlotte's financial sector is notably vigorous, staffed by over 104,000 professionals, and Citigroup's new facility signals continued growth. This move comes as part of an ongoing collaboration between the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and a confluence of state and local business development efforts that have, over the past year, generated nearly $200 million in capital investment and spawned upwards of 1,800 new jobs for the city.
