Citigroup is planting deeper roots in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a $16.1 million investment in a major office facility. This move, creating 510 new jobs, points to the city's burgeoning status as a financial hub. Edward Skyler, Citi’s head of enterprise services and public affairs highlighted Charlotte's appeal, noting, "This will create a better working environment for our existing colleagues as well as allow us to further tap into the deep pool of talent in this market." Citigroup's commitment underscores the region’s allure to the financial sector, promising jobs in finance, risk management, and more, as mentioned in a statement by MeckNC.gov.

With an annual average salary of $133,435, the positions are set to pay above the metro area's average, infusing the local economy with high earning potential. The new hub is not just expansion; it's a consolidation of Citigroup's commitment to the Charlotte area, where approximately 275 employees are already stationed and will be repositioned to the new site. Governor Josh Stein hailed this development, saying in a press release, "Citi’s decision makes clear once again that Charlotte is one of the nation’s top financial centers."

The selected locale for Citigroup's facility is yet to be announced, with the final decision anticipated to be made public later in the year. Chair Mark Jerrell of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners views this as an alignment with the area's goals, stating, "It’s a win for our residents, bringing high-quality jobs and advancing Mecklenburg County’s long-term priorities." Mayor Vi Lyles echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude towards Citigroup for recognizing Charlotte's talented workforce and its optimistic future.

Charlotte’s claim as the second largest finance center in the United States is further bolstered by the presence of over 104,000 financial services workers in the region. Citigroup's global influence, with operations in more than 180 countries, adds to the city's prestige. This initiative is part of a larger collaboration involving Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and other North Carolina institutions, which in the past year have jointly facilitated nearly $200 million in investment and over 1,800 new jobs, according to MeckNC.gov.
