In response to the rapidly spreading wildfires across three counties in Colorado, Governor Polis has issued a verbal disaster declaration for Montrose, Delta, and Mesa Counties. These fires, reportedly sparked by a single weather event on July 10th, have prompted state officials to intensify their efforts across the affected regions. According to the Colorado Governor's Office, the fires in question include the South Rim, SowBelly, Turner Gulch, Wright, and Deer Creek fires, which are now being challenged by the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS).
With the disaster declaration in effect, operation protocols such as the State Emergency Operations and Resource Mobilization Plans are activated, enabling a more structured and potent response to the fires' consequences. Running the State Emergency Operations Center, the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) is lending its support to county emergency managers, affected by the fires that the Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) is currently grappling with, alongside other CDPS Divisions.
The collective effort, as described by the Governor's office, aims to streamline the management of the incidents and enhance suppression efforts. This interdivisional cooperation is particularly essential as the state battles to contain the multiple fires, each spreading its narrative of destruction across these communities. Notably, the DHSEM acts as a battalion commander of sorts, marshaling resources and coordinating actions to quell the fiery onslaught.
