Drivers in Colorado should be ready for a surge of pedal power this Saturday, as about 4,000 bicyclists take to the roads for the Triple Bypass bike tour. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has issued a notice to motorists that US 6 over Loveland Pass will be off-limits to cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to accommodate the two-wheeled participants.
With a highway closure like this, regular traffic is directed to the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels, where vehicles carrying hazardous materials will be treated to an escort, westbound at the start of each hour and eastbound on the half-hour. Beyond the Pass, drivers should also be aware of closures on Highway 103 and Alvarado Road at specific times, with allowances for local traffic, according to CDOT.
Cyclists will be riding the I-70 frontage roads through Vail and along US 6 from Dowd Junction to Avon, although these roads will remain open to cars. "Drivers are reminded to give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing," CDOT emphasizes, a mandate that, if ignored, can lead to a ticket.
