As the summer heat bears down on Colorado, outdoor aficionados are getting a digital helping hand from the Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) mobile app. This free resource, brought to life by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), is making sure that users are clued in on active fire alerts, including updates on both wildfires and prescribed burns. The goal is simple: to keep people informed and safe while they enjoy the state’s natural splendor.
The app isn't just throwing together random bits of data. More than 236 land managers have pitched in to present a comprehensive look at over 45,000 miles of Colorado trails. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, real-time advisories cover a gamut of concerns, from wildlife closures to safety hazards. The COTREX app conveniently provides routes, allowed activities, downloadable maps, and land manager-endorsed trip suggestions.
Fire alerts on COTREX are culled daily from reliable sources, including Inciweb and the National Interagency Fire Center. While agency partners abound, trumpeting their advisories through the app, not every agency has climbed aboard, and the information's accuracy and timeliness aren't set in stone. Still, State Trails Program Coordinator Joe O'Brien stressed the app's importance, saying, "COTREX is a powerful tool for planning your next trip," as per Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and reminded users that the information is based on the best available sources, while also suggesting that contacting local authorities for the most current updates remains a wise move.
