A tragic incident unfolded this past weekend along the Blue Ridge Parkway when Muhammad Sultan, a 58-year-old man from Columbia, South Carolina, succumbed to a medical emergency while hiking near the Graveyard Fields Overlook Trailhead. The emergency call was received just before 4 p.m. on Sunday, according to WBTV. Despite the efforts of responding paramedics, and National Park Service rangers, Sultan was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.
Details surrounding the incident remain sparse, with officials yet to release the cause of death. Sultan was reportedly experiencing, medical complications when park rangers and first responders initiated CPR at the scene. Park officials have stated that Sultan passed away in the ambulance on the way to Haywood Regional Hospital, as reported by WLOS.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, noted for its stunning vistas and recreational opportunities, stretches over 469 miles through the mountain ridges of Virginia and North Carolina. This incident marks the second hiker death this year along the parkway, following an April tragedy where a North Carolina man fell and subsequently died from his injuries sustained along the Boone Fork Trail.
