The Columbus community recently came together to honor the memory of Rachel Prince, a cherished art teacher at Marion-Franklin High School, whose life was tragically cut short in what is suspected to be a case of domestic violence. Prince, 46, remembered for her profound impact on students and colleagues, was found unresponsive at her home and pronounced dead, the victim of strangulation, as per the coroner’s report released the following day. NBC4i reported the somber details surrounding the circumstances of her untimely passing.
A series of vigils took place this past week, with one of the most poignant, a balloon release, held on Monday night at Prince's school in Columbus. Among the mourners was John Stock, Prince’s uncle, who, surrounded by family, shared with WBNS the extent of his niece's influence on others. He was particularly moved by the young men in their 20s, who showed up with tears running down their faces to honor a teacher they had not seen in years.
Other tributes included candlelight vigils at Goodale Park and The Charles School at Ohio Dominican University, as described by The Columbus Dispatch. Expressions of grief and shock were echoed by her students, who referred to Prince affectionately as "Ms. P" and "Princey," and emphasized the lasting impact she had on their lives, extending well beyond the classroom.
Shaquan Lunsford, a soon-to-be senior at Marion-Franklin, recalled his last interaction with Prince at Taco Fest earlier in the summer, where she looked forward to the upcoming school year with promise. "She was just more than a teacher," Lunsford told NBC4i, describing her as a second aunt. Similarly, Princess Smith, another student of Prince, fought back tears as she described her late teacher as a kind soul, expressing disbelief at the nature of her death.
Authorities have reported that Jason Palmer, 37, Prince's boyfriend, has been charged with her murder, as he allegedly strangled her to death. The loss of Rachel Prince has clearly left a significant void within the community she so deeply touched with her dedication, kindness, and passion for teaching. Her legacy is likely to live on in the hearts of all who knew her, shown in the outpouring of grief and love at the gatherings in her memory.
