The exercises, which took place from July 21, were designed not only to teach the necessary skills but also to inflict the kind of stress and nervous tension found at an authentic emergency scene, the candidates were pitted against one another operating as ladder and engine crews, confronting various simulated emergencies, built to imitate the unpredictability of real-world incidents they will face serving Columbus neighborhoods. Each scenario was an opportunity for an evaluation and a subsequent critical deconstruction in the after-action assessments led by training officers.
