In Cornelia, Georgia, two individuals who had searched a house in Habersham County brought items to the local police station, prompting an emergency response. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the pair believed they had stumbled upon a couple of live grenades and felt it was prudent to seek the aid of law enforcement for proper disposal.
The Cornelia Police Department didn't take any chances with the potentially explosive artifacts. Upon the arrival of the two citizens, an officer at the scene sprang into immediate action, initiating the department’s bomb protocol and orchestrating an evacuation of the surrounding area, which included the premises around Cornelia City Hall. The situation prompted a swift response from the GBI Bomb Squad, who were summoned to assess the ordinances, as noted by AccessWDUN.
Both news outlets reported that the suspected munitions were found to be harmless after an examination revealed the grenades contained no explosive powder. The fuses remained intact. As a precaution, the GBI arranged to take the grenades to a secure location for disposal to ensure they would not pose a threat to the public.
The incident caused a temporary disruption but ended without injury or damage. The GBI has not released additional information regarding the grenades' origin or how they came to be abandoned in the house. Afterward, both suspected explosives were taken by the GBI for safe disposal.
