The Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs is issuing a warning to all residents to be vigilant against a surge in jury duty scam calls. These fraudulent calls, often conducted by individuals posing as court officials or deputies, falsely claim that a resident has failed to appear for a scheduled court date. Unlike previous scams that demanded immediate payment of fines, the new modus operandi involves directing potential victims to seemingly legitimate websites where personal details are solicited under the guise of calculating fines.

Residents have reported to the authorities that they've entered sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, and driver's license photos into these scam websites before being prompted to pay exorbitant sums, which could go as high as $10,000 in non-existent "fines". The Department of Consumer Affairs cautions residents to recognize that government entities utilize ".gov" domains for their official websites, not the ".org" or ".com" domains employed by these scams. The department reiterates that courts use U.S. mail to notify individuals of jury duty and law enforcement officials do not make calls pertaining to missed court appearances or solicit fines over the phone.

In a statement obtained by Cuyahoga County News, the department emphasized the following guidelines for residents: Be wary of calls, texts, and emails regarding missed court appearances as they are unequivocally scams. Also, one should never rely on callback numbers given in unspecific legal-related messages, as these lead to fraudsters behind these operations. Instead, residents are encouraged to keep their personal information safe and to report any suspicious communications to the Cuyahoga County Scam Squad.

The county has set up channels to tackle these deceptive practices. Residents are urged to report any such scam attempts by calling 216-443-7226 or visiting the official Cuyahoga County Scam Squad website. This initiative aids in the county's efforts to clamp down on these fraudulent activities and to help protect the community from becoming victims of identity theft and financial loss. The department's proactive stance serves as both a deterrent to would-be scammers and a beacon of information for residents to safeguard their personal data.
