A D.C. man, Tyriq Williams, received a 16-year prison sentence for the 2023 murder of Terry Clark. The 34-year-old was sentenced following a guilty plea to second-degree murder while armed, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Williams appeared before the Honorable Todd E. Edelman on April 23, and was sentenced as part of a plea deal. After serving his prison time, Williams is set to undergo five years of supervised release, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The fatal incident took place on January 7, 2023, where Williams, alongside his girlfriend, encountered Clark at the Navy Yard Metro Station.
The government's evidence highlighted that, unknown to each other previously, Williams turned around after exiting the metro station and fatally shot Clark in the head. He then re-entered the metro, riding to Congress Heights Station, followed by a bus to his workplace. A friend, who the defendant had told needed a ride, picked up Williams from his job and took him home. While the shooting itself wasn't caught on camera, investigators were able to place the defendant at the shooting site and on the bus through multiple video surveillances, including those of the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing Williams’ sentence. The efforts of the MPD investigating the case were praised, and the work by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly K. Smith and Jamie Carter, alongside former Assistant U.S. Attorney John Interrante, was acknowledged for their prosecution and investigation of the case. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office announcement, detectives discovered distinctive clothing at the defendant's home, which matched that worn on the night of the murder, pursuant to a search warrant.
