Residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth area are preparing for a scorcher of a week, with temperatures soaring near the 100-degree mark, further complicated by an ozone action day alert indicating that conditions will be ripe for elevated ozone levels. According to the National Weather Service, today's temperature is expected to hit a high near 97, with heat index values that could feel like 101. The clear skies will continue into the night, with the low settling around 76 degrees, and a consistent pattern of sunny days and mostly clear nights is anticipated well into the following week.
The soaring temperatures are accompanied by an air quality concern; the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued an Ozone Action Day for Friday, July 18, indicative of the potential for high levels of ozone air pollution in the area, this is in no small part owed to the atmospheric conditions which are particularly favorable for ozone production. In their statement, TCEQ advises residents that they can help prevent ozone pollution by engaging in activities such as sharing a ride, walking, riding a bicycle, taking lunch to work, avoiding drive-through lanes, conserving energy, and ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, per the National Weather Service.
The forecast for the week does not suggest much reprieve from the heat, with each ensuing day mirroring the last, sunny and with temperatures on a steady climb. South winds at 5 to 15 mph, occasionally gusting as high as 25 mph, will offer little in terms of cooling but may contribute to spreading pollutants, making the air quality concerns even more pressing especially as the work week begins under a blanket of heat that promises to hover just shy of the century mark while nightfall only grants a modest drop in temperature, residents are urged to take the Air Quality Alert seriously and make appropriate adjustments to their daily routines.
