Seattle commuters are in for a smoother ride as the city rolls out new 24/7 bus lanes along Aurora Avenue N. The lanes, designed to expedite travel between downtown Seattle and N 145th Street, aim to enhance service for the nearly 14,000 passengers riding the RapidRide E Line daily. In a post published by the Seattle Department of Transportation, details emerged of the improvements coinciding neatly with the anticipated increase in traffic due to the Revive I-5 lane closures starting July 18. These lanes intend to quickly become crucial arteries in the city's transit network.
According to the SDOT, the vision behind the project is to steadily make the bus system so dependable that schedules become redundant. Riders should be able to confidently walk up to a stop and expect service "every 5 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day." These ambitious improvements include more than 600 new traffic signs, fresh red pavement markings to designate bus-only areas, and reconfigured on-street parking to accommodate the new lanes. The changes are part of a larger-scale re-imagining of Aurora Ave N, seeking to better safety and accessibility for all.
These efforts don't stand alone. Seattle has been actively upgrading various transit lines across the city, garnering support from voters through the Seattle Transit Measure. Noteworthy developments have touched on Route 44 and 48, the RapidRide D line, and Rainier Ave S bus lanes, among others. The implementation of the bus-only lanes goes hand-in-hand with increased bus frequencies and the distribution of complimentary ORCA cards to Seattle Housing Authority residents.
Complementing the city's progress, Sound Transit is expanding its Link light rail system, and the State has championed free bus rides for youth 18 and under.
