Over the holiday weekend, tragedy struck a Detroit neighborhood as three teenagers were shot and left in critical condition. The violence erupted near Acacia and Bentler streets, and as reported by ClickOnDetroit, the shooting took place just before 3 a.m. yesterday.
The victims, identified as one 17-year-old and two 18-year-olds, were found wounded following what law enforcement referred to as an illegal street gathering. Despite the gathering's description, local families noted off-camera that many attendees, mostly youths, were being respectful. However, complications arose, leading to the critical injuries of the three teens, according to ClickOnDetroit.
The Detroit Police Department received a notification from ShotSpotter, alerting them to multiple gunshots fired in the afflicted area. FOX 2 Detroit has reported that upon arrival, police found the victims and promptly transported them to the hospital. While specific details around the shooting are still being investigated, the Detroit Police Department is actively seeking information from witnesses and has urged anyone with knowledge of the event to reach out.
"A street gathering can be illegal when it causes congestion that makes it hard for cars and emergency vehicles to pass through or obstructs noise ordinances," Detroit Police Department Director of Media Relations Jasmin Barmore explained, per the Detroit Free Press. Additionally, Detroit has a youth curfew of 11 p.m., which may have also been violated during the event.
