Earlier today, a blaze has severely impacted the Marble Hill community, with dozens of residents forced to vacate their homes as the fire tore through a six-story apartment building. According to ABC 7NY, the fire began around 12:15 a.m. within an apartment located at 18 Jacobus Place, quickly spreading to the cockloft and the roof, leaving many without shelter.

Despite the firefighters' efforts to rapidly combat the flames, three had to be hospitalized due to heat exposure. A strong response was seen as 138 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, enacting rotations to try and limit their risk to the oppressive heat, as noted by ABC 7NY. The cause of this devastating event remains under investigation.

In the wake of the incident, the Red Cross has stepped in to assist displaced individuals, providing aid to 10 households, which encompasses 21 adults and eight children, as highlighted by CBS New York. The building housed a total of 33 units, indicating the far-reaching effects of the fire on the local community.

Residents recount moments of panic and distress as they were urged to quickly leave their homes. "We heard loud bangs on our door and we just came out, and all of us ran downstairs. We saw all of our neighbors downstairs, and then we saw the sixth-floor fire," one woman told CBS New York in an interview. Karil Garcia, another resident, shared the chaos and loss she faced stating, "You never expect things like that, and I'm emotional," further describing the havoc within her apartment to CBS New York.
