The City of Eden Prairie has recently been applauded for its significant commitment to sustainable initiatives, earning it the Best of B3 Award at Minnesota's 2025 Best of Buildings, Benchmarks, and Beyond (B3) Recognition Event on June 18. This award serves as a nod to their leadership in maintaining sustainable building practices across various facilities.
The city's endeavors have spanned from replacing boilers at the City Center, noted for a 25% increase in energy efficiency, to a complete overhaul of the Round Lake Park Building, which now features solar panels, a green roof, and geothermal heating and cooling systems. According to the City of Eden Prairie's publication, these are just slices of an entire pie of improvements aimed at boosting sustainability.
Each of these changes contributes to more efficient energy consumption and reduced environmental impact. The Maintenance Facility's six high-efficiency rooftop HVAC units and the Community Center's ice rink gaining a high-efficiency air handling unit are testaments to an overarching strategy that Eden Prairie has implemented to uphold greener municipal operations.
"These upgrades not only reduce our environmental impact but also result in long-term cost savings for taxpayers," Eden Prairie Mayor Ron Case explained. The Fire Station #1 and Senior Center also received substantial retrofits including HVAC upgrades and high-efficiency models respectively, as reported by Eden Prairie's official announcement.
The B3 program under which the city has been honored was established in 2001 by the State of Minnesota to encourage energy efficiency and sustainable designs in public infrastructure. The city's recognition at the event highlights its robust approach to adopting these practices not just as a mean to save energy but also to streamline costs for the community it serves.
