El Paso Community College's AWCC (Association of Women in Community College) recently honored six of its students with scholarships, shining a light on the extraordinary efforts of these individuals. The prestigious $750 awards, with one doubled through a partnership with the EPCC Foundation, were handed out during a Scholarship Reception at the college's THIRTEENO9 Restaurant.
Among the scholars is Claudia Barron Antunez, a Nursing major balancing the demands of school and motherhood. "I feel very happy and excited," Claudia expressed in an interview with El Paso Community College.
Another remarkable story belongs to English major Mirelly Barajas, who overcame a cognitive impairment and various educational setbacks. She recounts the moment of learning about her award: "The most important and most memorable day of my life." Her resolve illustrates a spirit of resilience that the AWCC champions. The association, through membership dues and fundraising, has awarded over $72,000 in scholarships since 2002. These efforts are essential in fostering an environment where students like Dennise Muñoz, a single mother and Nursing major, can attain their dreams. Dennise brings personal experience to her chosen field, having battled leukemia and drawing inspiration from the nurses who cared for her. According to El Paso Community College, she looks forward to giving back to my community by helping other sick patients feel better.
Equally inspiring are the goals of Architecture major Jacqueline Silva, who aims to integrate her work with urban planning to create accessible, equitable spaces. Graphic Design major Adriana Daly seeks to support immigrant communities, reflecting on El Paso's structure as a city built on the backs of immigrants. Lastly, Solana Thomson, a Psychology major, plans to focus her practice on mental health aid for women and children in crisis. This initiative underscores the intersection of personal passion and societal need.
