El Paso Independent School District is gearing up to welcome students back with a fresh slate of initiatives aimed at streamlining preparation for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. Detailed on their official website, these updates include a more flexible dress code and a district-wide provision of free school supplies. Furthermore, with a new statewide law going into effect, students will need to adjust to a cell phone ban during school hours.
Starting August 4, El Paso ISD students can expect to dress with more ease thanks to the expanded options in the dress code. As reported by El Paso ISD, the changes permit additional colors and styles within the uniform policy, while non-uniform campuses will benefit from a more inclusive policy. That's to say nothing of the allowance of jeans and twill pants in several colors, which now will be accepted attire in middle schools, PK-8, and elementary campuses.
In a meaningful step toward educational equity, El Paso ISD announced it will provide free school supplies to all students, elementary-age kids receiving individual supplies, while classroom sets will be distributed for older students. "Removing barriers to learning starts with making sure every student has what they need to succeed on day one," Interim Superintendent Martha Aguirre stated, as per El Paso ISD. However, families should note that additional items may be requested by certain campuses, and non-Title 1 schools like Tippin Elementary and Lundy Elementary won't be part of this program.
The start of the academic year will also see the implementation of Texas House Bill 1481, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, which prohibits the use to extensively utilize cell phones, smartwatches, and other such devices during school hours. Parents and students still awaiting details on the specifics of the ban's enforcement will need to stay tuned. El Paso ISD has until September 18 to formalize a policy detailing the consequences for breaking the new law, promising to inform families as more guidance becomes available.
