In an incident that sparked heated debate online, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office took to social media to address a controversial arrest video. Sheriff Brad Norman issued a statement explaining the circumstances around a deputy's use of force during the apprehension of a suspect. The video in question depicted the deputy striking the individual with a closed fist to the midsection after the individual, identified as Robert Martin Smith, resisted arrest and failed to comply with verbal commands. The Sheriff's statement, which was released on the Ellis County Sheriff's Office's social media post, emphasized that the deputy's actions were within the department's policies and procedures following a review that included body-worn camera footage.
According to the statement given by Sheriff Norman, the incident occurred when the deputy had successfully applied one handcuff to Smith but met resistance when attempting to secure the other. "The video shows the deputy delivering a closed-fist strike to a subject who was actively failing to comply with verbal commands," elucidated the Sheriff's Office. Despite the arrest, no injuries were reported for either party involved. Public responses to the office's post reflected a mix of support for the department's transparency and concern regarding the use of forcible measures.
Smith now faces multiple charges, including Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1/1-8<1G, Tamper/Fabricate Phys Evidence W/Intent to Impair, Evading Arrest Detention, and Resist Arrest Search or Transport.
