Esteemed Ohio State University professor Umit Ozkan is slated to speak at the upcoming summer commencement, as announced by the university. Dr. Ozkan, an acclaimed figure in the realm of engineering, will address the graduating class at the ceremony scheduled for August 3 at the Schottenstein Center.
The commencement, which begins at 2 p.m., is set to honor approximately 1,600 graduates. In a statement obtained by OSU News, President Walter "Ted" Carter Jr. conveyed his enthusiasm about Dr. Ozkan's participation, "Dr. Ozkan is a longtime Buckeye, an internationally recognized scholar and a highly regarded leader in the field of engineering. I’m confident she will share valuable insights to graduates in every field of study as they take their next steps in building lives of leadership and service,” he said.
Ozkan's relationship with Ohio State spans several decades, having joined the Chemical Engineering department faculty in 1985. Her wide-scaled influence in academic research is evident from her various roles over the years, including a stint as the associate dean for research in the College of Engineering and collaborations with international institutes like the French Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.
Over her prolific career, Ozkan has not only written more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters but has also edited eight books. She holds eight patents and boasts a citation count exceeding 15,000, signaling the heavy impact her work has had on the engineering field. These achievements reflect her stature and the valuable perspective she is expected to share with the Class of 2025.
