A Hamilton County Prosecutor has indicted an Evanston man on serious charges after he allegedly sold a fentanyl compound that led to the death of a Sycamore Township woman. According to LOCAL12 News, Malik Mabrey faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and corruption of another with drugs in the aftermath of Sierra Curley's 2023 overdose death, a 26-year-old woman who met Mabrey upon release from drug rehabilitation.
Released from a stint in prison for a previous drug trafficking conviction, Mabrey, who served four and a half years, has been out for 16 months. Following the day he allegedly sold the narcotics to Curley, she was found dead due to an overdose. Prosecutor Connie Pillich expressed her commitment to handling such cases with utmost severity, stating in a statement obtained by FOX19, "When you sell deadly drugs and somebody dies, you will be held accountable. Period."
Mabrey's indictment also includes a charge for trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound. Even though Mabrey remains at large, advanced data and detection technologies have reinforced the prosecutor's case against him. Pillich has been vocal about using these tools to not only lay charges but also to secure convictions, aiming to set a precedent that would deter similar criminal acts in the future. "We have the technology and tools that allow us to detect who touched the fentanyl, and we can pinpoint it on these drug dealers," Pillich told LOCAL12 News. "They are killing people."
Conviction on the charges could result in up to 20 years of incarceration. This case follows a pattern of similar cases in the Hamilton County area, where drug dealers are increasingly being charged with homicide linked to their illicit sales. Mabrey's previous relationship as a dealer with the deceased was detailed, who had supposedly turned to him shortly after seeking treatment for her addiction, highlighting the systemic challenges facing individuals grappling with substance abuse. "Instead, he exploited a young woman at her most vulnerable," Pillich said, as reported by WLWT.
