A recent report from the House Judiciary Committee has shed new light on the actions of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under the leadership of former Director Christopher Wray and the Biden Administration. Titled "Report: How the Biden-Wray FBI Manufactured a False Narrative of Catholic Americans as Violent Extremists," the document claims the FBI unfairly targeted traditional Catholics, labeling them as potential violent extremists. This characterization is said to have been derived, at least in part, from data provided by the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

The report alleges that the surveillance of Catholics went deeper than previously known—stretching from local clergy to coordination across national and international FBI offices. A priest associated with a local Catholic church was interviewed and later surveilled by the FBI's Richmond Field Office after declining to share information on a subject connected to the controversial Richmond memorandum, which named Catholics as potential racially motivated extremists. It is also noted that the FBI attempted to breach the priest-penitent confidentiality under suspect justifications, although the individual seeking counsel was not fully initiated into the Catholic faith.

According to the House Judiciary Committee's report, there were over 1,300 pages of documents related to this investigation that went undisclosed during Wray's tenure. These documents include not just the Richmond memorandum, but also at least 13 others that referred to Catholics using pejorative terms such as "radical traditionalist catholic."

The Committee's findings have prompted further examination of the actions taken by the FBI under previous leadership. With new leadership under Director Kash Patel pledging cooperation and transparency, the Committee stated it will continue its oversight efforts. According to the report, the goal is to pursue legislative reforms aimed at addressing concerns related to the use of federal law enforcement resources and religious liberties. The full impact of the report’s findings remains to be seen as public and institutional responses continue to develop.
