Major construction is soon to ripple through the streets of Milwaukee, as the American Transmission Company (ATC) gears up for an extensive underground power line replacement project along S. 43rd Street, starting from Howard Avenue and extending north to Jackson Park. Local officials have spread word of the impending disruptions: Alderman Peter Burgelis and Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa aim to prepare residents for the scheduled work set to span mid-August through the year 2027, according to a release from the City of Milwaukee.
In an effort to proactively address concerns, the ATC is slated to host two community meetings on August 5 at the Sister Joel Read Center of Alverno College, as detailed in the official announcement. Meetings are scheduled for 2-4 p.m. and a repeat session from 5-7 p.m., offering residents flexible timing to learn more about the project's scope and impact. As travel and parking nuances are poised to change, city dwellers are encouraged to drop by anytime during these windows to gather information.
The construction work will involve removing bike and parking lanes along most of S. 43rd Street. However, one southbound and one northbound lane will remain open north of Forest Home Avenue to maintain the flow of traffic. For those traveling northbound from Howard Avenue to Oklahoma Avenue, a detour will redirect them to 35th Street, and one southbound lane will stay accessible for vehicles, per the project release.
Residents should also prepare to adjust to intermittent full lane closures, a necessary disruption for the maneuvering of heavy equipment throughout the construction period. This infrastructure update seeks to replace aging components buried beneath 43rd Street since the 1950s, an essential modernization that Alderman Burgelis and Alderperson Zamarripa stressed in their joint release to the community.
