A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning in Scottsdale when a swarm of bees attacked a work crew, resulting in one fatality and two hospitalizations. The crew members were performing maintenance on the roof of the Vi at Silverstone Independent Living facility when they were overwhelmed by the bees near Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak Road around 9:30 a.m., FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
Police confirmed that the victim who died was in critical condition after being swarmed in a cherry picker. Two colleagues attempting to help were also attacked. Upon arrival, firefighters used water and foam to fend off the bees. A spokesperson for the Scottsdale Fire Department described the initial victim had sustained too many stings to count, according to 12News.
While the identities of the victims have not been officially released, the concern is that these bees were likely Africanized honey bees, renowned for their aggressive behavior particularly in situations where their hive is disturbed. Emergency physician and medical toxicologist Dr. Frank LoVecchio warned of the dangers associated with these bees, telling 12News, "It's very hard to protect yourself. Once you get nailed by one, all the other guys come over." He noted that the venom can lead to severe health issues, including the potential for kidney and liver failure.
Aaron Lorti, founder of AZ Bee Kings, emphasized the perils posed during this time of year when hot temperatures stir the bees into heightened activity. "These bees are very active and very aggressive," Lorti said in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix. He advised immediate professional removal when hives are spotted near homes, as these insects can become a significant threat due to their territorial nature. Nearly all of the state's bees are Africanized, increasing the risk of fatal encounters.
Following the incident, an investigation will be conducted by the Scottsdale PD and the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner. The director of the Vi at Silverstone Independent Living facility has refrained from commenting on the situation, pending the results of the investigation.
