Early this morning, a deadly crash brought East Houston's I-10 East to a standstill, causing extensive delays as authorities worked to investigate and clear the scene. A pickup truck, for reasons not yet disclosed, collided with the back of an 18-wheeler near the Waco offramp at approximately 3:30 a.m., as reported by Click2Houston. The impact tragically pinned the pickup driver, leading to a fatality at the scene.
The aftermath of the incident forced a shutdown of eastbound lanes on the interstate, directly impacting the morning commute. The situation was further complicated when a stalled vehicle was reported to have kept part of the roadway closed, even after authorities re-opened it around 6 a.m. It has yet to be determined whether the stalled vehicle was connected to the initial crash.
In response to the blockage, Houston TranStar advised commuters to seek alternative routes. Suggested detours included using US-59 Eastex Freeway southbound to connect with I-45 Gulf Freeway southbound, or exiting at Lockwood Drive or Gregg Street prior to the closure. Heavy delays were expected for drivers heading into downtown Houston during morning peak hours, according to KHOU.
