An officer-involved shooting erupted early yesterday morning on the 2200 block of South I-35E Service Road in Lewisville, following a multi-city police chase that ended with a fatality. The Lewisville Police Department (LPD) released a statement through social media, detailing the course of events that began just after midnight when an officer stopped a female driver on suspicion of a felony warrant.
During the routine stop to confirm the outstanding warrant, the suspect sped away, leading officers on a chase that spanned over several jurisdictions. An accident ensued between the suspect's vehicle and the LPD patrol car, but no injuries were reported from the collision. "The pursuit eventually ended in a commercial parking lot in the 2200 block of the southbound I-35E service road in Lewisville," the LPD clarified in their public communication.
The situation escalated when the suspect, still alone in the vehicle, was reported to have displayed a handgun during the arrest attempt and failed to comply with officers' commands to drop the weapon. In response, shots were fired by LPD officers, resulting in the suspect being hit. "The suspect was struck by the gunfire," according to the LPD statement.
Officers on scene attempted lifesaving measures and called for medical assistance, but the suspect succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital shortly after 1 a.m. It was confirmed that a handgun was recovered from inside the suspect’s vehicle. The identity of the woman will later be disclosed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
