The Metropolitan Police Department recently updated the public on a case involving the death of a young child in Northwest, D.C. last year. According to the official statement provided by the MPD, a 5-year-old boy named Deandre Pettus was found unconscious on October 6, 2024, inside an apartment on the 4500 block of Connecticut Avenue. Efforts to save the child by United States Secret Service and DC Fire and EMS were unfortunately unsuccessful, and the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the wake of the incident, the father of the child, 33-year-old Deandre Pettus, was arrested and originally charged with First Degree Cruelty to Children. Further investigation by MPD's Homicide branch, in collaboration with a Grand Jury and the United States Attorney’s Office, led to a more severe charge.

The Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Pettus with First Degree Murder-Felony Murder. On July 11, 2025, the suspect was arraigned in DC Superior Court on the charge of First Degree-Felony Murder. The unfortunate death of the young Pettus was initially ruled as 'undetermined' by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner following the incident.
