The Florida Department of Transportation is launching an initiative that will see parts of the coastal A1A highway enhanced for the safety and convenience of its users. Specifically, two key intersections at NE 14th Court and NE 27th Street are set to receive significant upgrades in a bid to bolster safety measures and update the road's infrastructure, according to a recent press release.
In the details provided, the FDOT will be introducing new signalized crosswalks, traffic signals, and wildlife-friendly lighting solutions along the A1A stretch. Slightly inconveniencing the locals, lane closures will be seen daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at NE 27th Street and overnight from Monday through Thursday at NE 14th Court. Despite the disruptions, the project promises that access to homes and businesses will be maintained while construction is ongoing.
The comprehensive project, set to commence this July, has an estimated completion window that falls in the spring of 2026. As stated by the FDOT, "This project is designed to make A1A safer and easier to navigate for everyone who walks, bikes, or drives.” A sum of $2.08 million has been dedicated to the project, which will involve the resurfacing of roadways, upgrading ramps, and adding new signage and striping, as mentioned on the city's official website.
Moreover, the local community stands to benefit from improved pedestrian access, which, along with enhanced lighting, should reduce the risk for nighttime walkers. The public is kept informed through weekly road impact updates available on the FDOT website.
