An indictment has been issued against a former caregiver at a retirement community in Conneaut, Ashtabula County, for alleged sexual abuse of elderly residents. The Ohio Attorney General's office announced that Wayde Shankle, 35, faces charges including four counts of felony rape and one count of gross sexual imposition. These are serious accusations, with the rape charges being first-degree felonies and the gross sexual imposition a fourth-degree felony.
The case came to light following an investigation by the Ohio Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, with assistance from the Conneaut Police Department and the FBI. The allegations against Shankle involve two residents from the Villa at the Lake, where he was employed as a nurse aide. According to a statement obtained by the Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost's office, the Ashtabula County Prosecutor's Office will prosecute the case before the Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court in Jefferson.
As reports of this nature shock the conscience, it's crucial to remember that indictments are mere allegations. In the eyes of the law, defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Shankle's legal journey is just beginning, with the court process set to unfold the truth behind the charges.
Financially, the Ohio Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is primarily supported by federal funds, with a 75% contribution from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant awarded totals $15,343,488 for the federal fiscal year 2025, while the Ohio Attorney General’s Office covers the remaining 25% – a sum of $5,114,493 for the same period. This monetary support underscores the resources being poured into investigating and prosecuting such grievous cases as the one Shankle now faces.
