The Brink Road Bridge in Gaithersburg will be temporarily closed starting July 25 due to crucial resurfacing work. The work aims to prevent future safety hazards for the commuting public. According to the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), the bridge repair is part of a concerted effort to maintain the county's infrastructure, a necessity underscored by the structure's advancing age.
The work, which commences at 6 AM on Friday, July 25, will involve milling, paving and resurfacing operations, and the bridge will be inaccessible to all traffic until completion, slated for four days depending on weather and other variables, MCDOT is additionally gearing up to fully rehabilitate the bridge next summer based on its preliminary design tailored by public feedback obtained during a hearing in April 2025.
MCDOT's plans for the bridge were disclosed in a press release. They reflect an all-encompassing improvement encompassing two 11-foot travel lanes, 6-foot-wide bike lane shoulders on either side, and a heightened elevation to prevent flood damage. The bridge, first established in 1936 and subsequently reconstructed in 1972, awaits an upgrade to better serve its role in the Gaithersburg area’s transport web.
