A Galveston man, known as Alan Anthony Gomez, has been sentenced to over seven years in the Federal Pen for a drug trafficking charge in the Eastern District of Texas. In a press release issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced the sentencing.
During a traffic stop gone south in November last year, a vehicle where Gomez was riding shotgun got pulled over for reasons that are still unclear. Riding in Liberty County, the car was stopped; caught between conflicting alibis and the unmistakable scent of marijuana, a search ensued. Officials found more than just air fresheners and weed—nine kilograms of cocaine were discovered bundled up. Gomez, according to court documents, admitted on the spot that the packages were filled with coke, not fentanyl.
U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone handed down the sentence to Gomez yesterday, pegging him at 87 months inside federal prison. Having pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine, Gomez was offering no fight against the significant stretch he's now facing away.
The case was a joint effort by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, which together brought Gomez's free run to an end. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Grove led the prosecution that ultimately secured Gomez's sentencing.
