The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has issued an alert concerning a scam precisely targeting individuals on the state's sex offender registry. Scammers, masquerading as law enforcement officials, have been reportedly cold-calling registered offenders with a series of fraudulent demands. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, these impersonators are instructing their victims to go to Walmart, purchase a money order, and then share the money order number before taking the receipt to their local sheriff's office.
The scam unfolds with the scammers making off with the funds before the victims realize the deceitful nature of the operation. "By the time the target realizes it’s a scam, the funds are already gone," states the GBI warning, indicating the sophistication of such a heist. GBI assures the public that true law enforcement agencies would never solicit money through such telephonic means, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
In the same vein, WSAV underscores the danger and advises anyone encountering such fraudulent activity to disconnect the call immediately and notify their local police or sheriff's department. Confirming the legitimacy of any such outrageous request directly with your local law enforcement is the safest course of action, according to the reports.
Vigilance is imperative when dealing with unsolicited phone calls, especially ones demanding payment under the guise of law enforcement. "If you feel it may be a scam, hang up and call the local sheriff or police department directly to confirm," a counsel that echoes through a report from WSAV.
