The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is actively probing into the death of 26-year-old Daquan Phillips from Baltimore, Maryland, following a standoff with the U.S. Marshal Service. As detailed in a press release dated last Saturday from the GBI, authorities were attempting to serve felony warrants at a residence on the 30 block of Factors Walk in Hinesville last Friday when Phillips, reportedly uncooperative, barricaded himself inside.
Despite efforts by law enforcement to safely negotiate, the standoff persisted for several hours with numerous agencies, including the local sheriff's office, the Savannah Police Department SWAT team, and others arriving to aid. Eventually, law enforcement decided to forcibly enter the home to apprehend Phillips. According to the GBI, Phillips was found with a suspected gunshot wound and was declared deceased by the Liberty County Coroner's Office. A 5-year-old child, also present in the home, was safely removed without harm.
Phillips' body is scheduled to be taken to the GBI Crime Lab located in Pooler for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement gathering evidence and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the fatal incident.
The death investigation, once concluded, will not just end at the coroner's report but will extend to a comprehensive review by the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Further details are expected to be made public in the forthcoming days as the investigation continuously unfolds, and as the GBI and the involved agencies strive to provide clarity on the circumstances of Phillips' untimely death.
