An officer-involved shooting in Twiggs County that resulted in the death of one man and the arrest of another is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The incident occurred on the evening of July 18 and involved a vehicle pursuit that ended in gunfire.
The pursuit began when a Twiggs County Deputy Sheriff tried to stop a car for a traffic violation on Interstate I-16 westbound around 10:30 p.m. The driver did not comply, leading to a chase that culminated in the vehicle crashing near the Exit 12 off-ramp. According to the GBI's report, the deputy was attempting to render aid when shots were suddenly fired from within the crashed car.
The officer returned fire and additional shots were fired from inside the vehicle. The deputy later found that there were two individuals in the car. Christopher J. Martin-Holmes, 26, of Conley, GA, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Phillip Ellison Jr., 23, of Ellenwood, GA, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.
Martin-Holmes' body was transported to the Central Crime Lab in Macon, Georgia, where an autopsy is to be performed. The ongoing investigation is active, and the GBI is set to give the case file to the Dublin Judicial District Attorney's Office for review once it is complete. There were no reported injuries to officers involved in the shooting. The news release by the GBI provides no further details at this time.
This incident marks another in a series of officer-involved shootings, which continue to stir public concern and discussion about the use of force by law enforcement. The outcomes of the investigation and subsequent district attorney's review will be closely watched by the community and advocates for police reform.
