Yesterday, Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the completed renovation project at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, bringing significant upgrades to not only the infrastructure but also to the passenger experience as part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at economic revitalization of Central New York. The airport, which services a large swath of the state, from the Canadian border to Pennsylvania, has undergone a multifaceted expansion that bolsters the area's growing economic landscape, which includes a boost in passenger traffic that hit more than three million passengers in 2024, as reported by the Governor's office.
Part of the $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, Syracuse's enhancements feature a North Concourse expansion with improved seating and concessions, this infrastructure push ties directly into the state’s plans for fostering regional growth, accommodating a 5.2 percent hike in traffic from the previous year, and aligning with Micron's planned $100 billion semiconductor manufacturing campus in Onondaga County, according to Governor Hochul's announcement. The new designs aim to optimize air quality and energy use, while also meeting the latest Customs and Border Protection standards, which includes upgrades to process 200 passengers per hour, essential for maintaining the airport's international status.
Alongside the airport improvements, the New York State Department of Transportation has wrapped up the $10.5 million rehabilitation of the Airport Boulevard bridges over Interstate 81. The airport's modifications, including an additional 4,000 square feet to the North Concourse, foremost serve about 40 percent of the airport's yearly patrons, enhancing the central corridor for travelers and setting a precedent for future projects as part of New York's larger plans for its transportation facilities.
Officials from state and local offices—including State Senators Rachel May and Chris Ryan, Assembly Transportation Chair William Magnarelli, and Assembly Members Al Stirpe and Pamela Hunter—described the airport modernization as a key development for the region. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh referred to the airport as a "point of pride." At the official opening ceremony, Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Jason Terreri, joined by Governor Hochul and NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, outlined how the completed project is intended to support international travel and enhance regional economic and transportation infrastructure, as per the official announcement.
The Department of Transportation’s mission emphasizes its commitment to providing a transportation system that is functional, safe, equitable, and designed to improve quality of life.
